PhD student Yongyuan (Alex) Zang undertook a highly successful internship at the Institute of Microelectronics at Tsinghua University, one of China’s most prominent academic institutions. Working under the supervision of Prof. Dan Xie, a leading expert in novel material research, Mr. Zang commenced a systematic investigation of the fundamental optical properties of bismuth ferrite (BFO) and Nd-doped bismuth titanate (BNT) ferroelectric material. These two new materials are reported as novel ferroelectric materials with good electrical and optical properties and high fatigue endurance, and have great potential for future optical communication. Mr. Zang’s research project examines a BFO-based solar unit and seeks the optimized sandwich structure configuration parameter and theoretical model for the ferroelectric-based next generation solar cell.

This partnership with Tsinghua University resulted in four joint journal publications authored by Alex Zang, Prof. Dan Xie and Prof. David Plant.
