SYTACom Grants Programs

The SYTACom grants program aims at encouraging collaborative work, through special funding for travel or equipment in collaborative initiatives as well as providing top-up funds for graduate students hired on collaborative NSERC and FRQNT grants. Additionally, some funds are directed towards the recruitment of high-caliber PhD students.

Equipment grant

SYTACom will contribute 50% of the cost of small equipment to a maximum of $1,000 per application. Application may be made as many times as desired.

Allocation is based on scientific excellence, need for equipment and fair distribution of resources. Applications are judged based on contribution and impact of equipment to collaborative research efforts.

The Equipment Grant is awarded as reimbursement after purchase.

Eligibility: Equipment will be used to carry out collaborative research, and applicants will be PDF, PhD or MEng/MSc student jointly supervised by two SYTACom full members or one full member and one associate member.

Travel Grant

SYTACom will contribute 50% of the travel expenses, to a maximum of $1,000 per application, for a PDF, PhD or MEng/MSc student (see eligibility criteria below) to present research results at a conference. Students may reapply for the grant as many times as they wish.

Allocation of grants is based on scientific excellence of the paper (e.g., conference quality) and fair distribution of resources.

The Travel Grant is awarded as reimbursement upon completion of travel and upon submission of required documentation (i.e., receipts). Travel Grant application(s) should be made before travelling.

Eligibility: Application can be made by PDF, PhD or MEng/MSc student who is officially jointly supervised by two SYTACom full members or by one full member and one associate member. Research results must be collaborative (i.e., authorship must reflect the collaboration).

Collaborative Grants Supplement

SYTACom will provide an additional contribution to student salaries (“top-ups”) working on selected collaborative grant projects involving two or more SYTACom members or associate members as investigators.

A top-up of $1,000 per student per year (up to a maximum of $3,000 per grant per year) will be contributed by SYTACom to grant applications submitted for the following programs: NSERC Strategic Project; NSERC CRD; NSERC I2I; FRQNT Projet de recherche en équipe.

Please note that application to the Collaborative Grants Supplement may be retroactive to eligible NSERC and FRQNT applications submitted as of April 2009.

SYTACom’s cash commitment will be recorded in a support letter that can be included with the grant application. Financial commitments will be made until the budget allocated for the Collaborative Grants Supplement Program is exhausted.

Eligibility: Grant application should have at least two (2) SYTACom members or associate members listed as investigators.

Doctoral Recruitment Grants

In order to foster the recruitment of top-quality students in the PhD programs and research laboratories associated with SYTACom, any SYTACom member can request that an invitation be extended to a top student who is considering a PhD in one of the SYTACom nodes.

The Centre will cover airfare, meals and hotel for a stay of one week. The candidate will work under the supervision of one or more members or associate members.

Selection and criteria:
Application should be made for students whose research project will lead to enhanced collaboration between researchers. Applicants will be selected based on the quality of their academic record, likelihood of acceptance of a PhD offer, relevance of the proposed research topic to SYTACom research areas, and likelihood for co-supervision.

It is expected that the institution extending the invitation will match SYTACom funding with additional financial support such as top ups, research assistanceships, tuition fee waivers, equipment, etc.
