2012 SYTACom Annual Research Workshop

On Tuesday, September 4, 2012, SYTACom will host its annual Research Workshop in Quebec City.

This year's workshop will include invited speakers, a research poster session, an industry panel session, and an industry networking/recruiting wine and cheese.


Bus transportation to/from Quebec City for registered participants will be provided by SYTACom. Buses will depart at 7:00AM on Tuesday, September 4, returning to Montreal at approximately 8:00PM.

Departure location will be sent to registered participants via email.

Special optical Fibers and Nanostructured glasses: Research and developments of new technologies

ABSTRACT: The main issues and greatest challenges for the development of new photonic glasses are related to several aspects, from their synthesis to their shaping and integration into photonic devices.

Nowadays, although the Holy Grail of glass science still remains the reduction of the intrinsic losses of infrared glasses to their theoretical limits, two new drivers have arisen in recent years for the exploration and development of new technologies related to glass science: i) the photonic band-gap effect and ii) the production of nanostructured materials.

Based on these aspects, we will discuss on the development of novel optical glasses, namely heavy oxide and chalcogenide glasses and their impact on various fields of application such as information technology, environmental monitoring, biomedical devices and security/defence.

Roadways for Advancing Cellular Communications

Cellular communications has been advancing rapidly, achieving increases in data rates of one order of magnitude every 5 years. Will this continue, and for how long? Next to increasing the data rate, what are other new challenges which can be served by a new development in cellular communications?

This talk addresses these questions, and points out technical challenges of fifth generation wireless communications principles which have to be met by future research results. First promising research results show that the challenges will be met, even if most questions remain unanswered at this point in time.

Within a fifth generation cellular world, wireless communications systems will take on an even more important role in the future infrastructure of societies than today.
